Dictation Cheat Sheet

Guidelines to get the best results from AI dictation

  • Speak clearly and at a moderate pace.
  • Speak into the microphone.
  • Pause briefly before/after speaking a command (see below).
  • Spell out unfamiliar names or medications.
    • Example: instead of saying "Amiodarone", spell "A-M-I-O-D-A-R-O-N-E".

AI dictation works best with clear, deliberate speech. The most common source of errors is speaking too quickly or with poor pronunciation.

Formatting Commands

Action Say this...
New line "new line"
New paragraph "new paragraph"
New heading "new heading [title]"
Start dot point list "new list" or "start list" or "begin list"
Start numbered list "new numbered list" or "start numbered list" or "begin numbered list"
End list "end list"

Note: saying "end list" is optional. The AI will generally understand from context when the list should end.

Punctuation Commands

Punctation Symbol Say this...
. "stop" or "full stop"
, "comma"
: or ; "colon", "semicolon"
- "dash" or "hyphen"
( ) or [ ] or { } "open/close parentheses", "brackets", "braces"
% "per cent"

Note: use of explicit punctuation instructions is not required but is encouraged to prevent ambiguous outcomes.

Additional Behaviours

Measurement units will be abbreviated.

  • Example: say "millimoles per litre" to get "mmol/L".

Supports the NATO phonetic alphabet.

  • Example: say "hospital number juliet alpha 3 7 romeo 895" to get "Hospital Number JA37R895".

We welcome feedback and suggestions to improve the behaviour of HealthTrack dictation AI.

Importance of Human Review

Despite best efforts, AI can sometimes ignore or misinterpret commands.

AI makes best guesses based on its training; however, this can lead to it making a confident error.

Due to these unexpected behaviours, please ensure a human is involved in reviewing all dictations.
