How to Use the Clinical Summary tab

The Clinical Summary tab gives an at-a-glance overview of a patient's clinical history. It displays measurements, conditions, current medications, procedures, clinical notes, and custom fields, and provides quick access to allergies, family history, vaccinations, and other clinical functions.

The Clinical Summary is a per-patient view inside the patient record. It is separate from the Dr Dashboard, which shows a doctor's own workload (documents to approve, tasks, and today's bookings) rather than a single patient's history.

If you cannot see the Clinical Summary tab, your user account does not have permission to view it. Ask your practice administrator to update your security settings.

Sections on the Clinical Summary tab

Measurements

The Measurements section displays a table of the patient's blood pressure, height, weight, BMI, and oxygen saturation, along with the date and location of the booking where they were recorded.

These values come from the Base Assessment clinical record. Double-click any row to open the corresponding Base Assessment for more detail.

Double-click a column heading in the Measurements table to view that measurement as a graph over time.

To add new measurements, create a new Base Assessment record. You can do this by:

  • Clicking New above the Measurements section
  • Selecting Base Assessment from within a Clinical Consultation
  • Navigating to the Clinical Records tab, highlighting the Base Assessment folder, and clicking New

Conditions

The Conditions section lists conditions recorded for the patient that are marked as Current (those the doctor has flagged as clinically relevant).

  • Click New to add a single condition, or Multi to add several at once.
  • Click View to open the full Conditions window, where you can edit, reorder, and create parent/child relationships between related conditions.

Current Medications

The Current Medications section lists medications the patient is currently taking.

The buttons above the medication list:

  • Print - prints the patient's current medication list.
  • View - opens the Medication Review window, showing all current, past, and cancelled medications.
  • New - opens the Medication Prescriber to create a new prescription.

Procedures

The Procedures section lists procedures recorded for the patient that are marked as Current.

  • Click New to add a procedure.
  • Click View to open the full Procedures window, where you can edit and reorder entries.

Clinical Notes

The Clinical Notes section at the bottom of the tab displays the patient's consultation history. Notes can be shown as individual records or in a continuous view. Set your preference at File > User Preferences > Clinical Details > Default Clinical Notes View.

  • Click New to create a new clinical note.
  • Click View to open the General Consultations window for a full list of notes, conditions, and procedures.

Clinical notes are editable for 24 hours after creation by the user who created them. After 24 hours, notes can be amended but not edited.

Custom Fields

The Custom Fields section displays any custom fields recorded for the patient. These are commonly used for clinical trials, research projects, or medication studies.

What the Clinical Summary does not show

The Clinical Summary does not display pathology or radiology results, and does not flag abnormal results. Incoming results are viewed in the results area of the patient record, which is where abnormal values are colour-flagged. The Measurements section shows vitals recorded in Base Assessments, not laboratory values.

Keeping the Clinical Summary up to date

The Clinical Summary loads when you first open it and holds that view while the patient record is open. New prescriptions and clinical notes appear on the summary straight away. Other changes, such as allergies or vaccinations recorded while the record is open, may not appear until you close and reopen the patient record.

If something you recorded is not showing on the summary, close the patient record and open it again to refresh the view or use the refresh button next to the find patient button

Quick access buttons

The right-hand side of the Clinical Summary tab provides buttons for quick access to other clinical functions. The buttons that open recorded information in the Allergies, Family Hx, and Vaccinations/Immunisation show a green tick when the patient already has data recorded there, so you can see at a glance whether there is anything to review.

The MySL button requires the ePrescribing feature. If a button you expect is missing, check these settings before contacting support.
